Tencent’s investment in Studio MayDay results in its rebranding to Riffraff Games
Tencent continues to buy stakes in Western game companies. The Chinese tech giant now has a minority ownership of Studio MayDay, which is now working on two games.
According to the studio, Tencent made a “significant investment,” although the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed (via GamesIndustry.biz).
Studio MayDay, founded by the Framed series creator Joshua Boggs, will be relaunched as Riffraff Games. The team consists of other experienced devs from companies like EA, Creative Assembly, and Weta.
“The resources, experience and mentorship it has provided is allowing Riffraff Games to pursue things we didn’t know could be within our grasp,” Boggs said. “It’s a really exciting time for the studio.”
Riffraff Games has two titles in development. One of them, a third-person stealth action game, is expected to come out in 2022.
