Meta* has split its XR division into two business groups. Some people have been laid off

The Meta* Corporation has restructured its Reality Labs division, which focuses on mixed reality technologies. It has been split into two business groups — Metaverse and Wearables.

Horizon Workrooms

  • Metaverse now encompasses all business related to the metaverse. This primarily includes the social platform Horizon Worlds and the line of VR headsets, Quest. The group is led by Vishal Shah.
  • Wearables covers the business of working with AR devices, such as smart glasses. The group is headed by Alex Himel.

Sources from The Verge report that as part of the restructuring, Meta* has laid off some employees from Reality Labs. It is unclear how many people lost their jobs. It is assumed that their number was small — primarily affecting employees whose positions became redundant due to the reorganization within the division.

*Meta is recognized as an extremist organization in Russia, and its activities are banned in the country.
