Keene also admitted that he is not a fan of survival games. Typically, he finds games in this genre to be monotonous and simply boring. Therefore, his studio aimed to break the typical core loop of survival games in Abiotic Factor, keeping only the aspects of the genre they liked. For instance, the need to craft items and rest characters to recover strength. At the same time, Abiotic Factor borrowed some mechanics from RPGs.

At the time of writing, Abiotic Factor has an "extremely positive" rating on Steam. The game has received 6,400 reviews, 96% of which are positive. According to SteamDB data, Abiotic Factor had a peak concurrent player count of 21,753.
