Backpack Battles hits 500k copies sold in two weeks, becoming another indie success on Steam this year
Backpack Battles has been a huge success for PlayWithFurcifer, an indie gamedev couple from Germany. The game reached another impressive launch two weeks after its Early Access launch.
PlayWithFurcifer shared the news on March 22, announcing that they “sold over 500,000 copies of Backpack Battles in less than two weeks.” The team also released patch 0.9.2, which made several balance adjustments to the game’s classes.
The auto-battling RPG reached the 100k mark in less than two days after its launch. So it took another 12 days to hit the new milestone.

As we detailed in our previous article, Backpack Battles was initially made as a side project while PlayWithFurcifer was working on its upcoming roguelite Furcifer’s Fungeon. However, the title’s pre-launch performance was so strong that the team decided to focus on it first. In February it reached over 471k wishlists, indicating high player interest.
Upon its Early Access release, Backpack Battles peaked at over 36k concurrent players on Steam. This makes it the 15th biggest launch of 2024 on the platform in terms of peak CCU.
When looking at player count, it is also the top title in publisher IndieArk’s portfolio, followed by Feed the Cups (11.4k CCU), Travellers Rest (4.5k CCU), Thriving City: Song (3.7k CCU), and Peglin (3.7k CCU).

Backpack Battles currently holds a 94% rating on the store based on 5,780 user reviews. In addition, it debuted at #21 on Steam’s weekly top sellers chart, which is also an impressive feat for a project made by a small indie team.
