FromSoftware Parent Company bought Octopath Traveler co-authors

The Acquire studio, which together with Square Enix developed the Octopath Traveler series of games, became part of the Japanese Kadokawa holding. The holding company announced the transaction in its latest financial report.

The amount and terms of the transaction are unknown.

Thanks to the purchase, Kadokawa expects to increase its capabilities in game development and expand the range of titles for consoles. She hopes that Acquire will be able to "achieve synergy" with other company-owned game studios. In particular, with FromSoftware and Spike Chunsoft.

Acquire was founded in 1994. In addition to Octopath Traveler, she has worked on Tenchu series games, Way of the Samurai and many other projects. The studio is currently working on several games at once. Among them are the action—roguelike Ancient Weapon Holly and the real-time RPG Scars of Mars.

The main figures from Kadokawa's report for the quarter ended December 31

  • The holding's net sales are ¥62.8 billion ($420.36 million). A drop of 6.4% year-on-year.
  • The holding's operating profit is ¥4.73 billion ($31.6 million). A drop of 23.6% year-on-year.
  • Net sales of the gaming division are 5.4 billion rubles ($36.2 million). A drop of 13.9% year-on-year.
  • The operating profit of the gaming division is ¥1.96 billion ($13.2 million). An increase of 33% in annual terms.
  • Sales of the Armored Core VI were higher than Kadokawa's expectations. The report does not say how many copies of the game were sold.
