Nintendo reports strong 9-month period: nearly $9.5 billion in revenue and 11.96 million Super Mario Bros. Wonder units sold
Nintendo has released its financial report for the third quarter ended December 31, 2023. The Japanese gaming giant also updated the sales figures for its first-party games such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Financial highlights (Q1-Q3)
- According to its consolidated financial results, Nintendo reached ¥1.4 trillion yen ($9.4 billion) in revenue in the first three quarters of FY24 (the period between April 1 and December 31, 2023), up 7.7% year-over-year.
- Operating profit was ¥464.4 billion ($3.1 billion), up 13.1% compared to the same period last year, while net profit grew 17.9% year-over-year to ¥408 billion ($2.74 billion).
- 78.7% of Nintendo’s revenue came from outside of Japan. The Americas was its biggest region, accounting for 43.9% of the total, while Europe and Japan accounted for 25% and 21.3% respectively.
- Digital sales increased by 11.7% year-over-year and reached ¥346.4 billion ($2.33 billion), accounting for 48.1% of the company’s total revenue.
- In the nine-month period, the company sold 13.74 million Nintendo Switch units, down 7.8% year-over-year. But the sales of the OLED model jumped 6.2% to 8.17 million units.
- As of December 31, 2023, Nintendo Switch reached 139.3 million units sold. It remains the third best-selling game console of all time, behind Nintendo DS (154 million) and PlayStation 2 (155+ million).
- In 2023, the number of annual paying users reached 122 million users, up from 114 million in 2022.
Game sales
- In Q1-Q3, Nintendo sold 163.95 copies of games in the nine-month period, 66.87 million of which were sold during Q3 alone. Overall, game sales decreased by 4.7% compared to the same nine-month period in FY23.
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom reached 20.28 million copies sold. It is now officially the second best-selling game of 2023, behind Hogwarts Legacy (22 million units).
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder sold 11.96 million units in its first two months, and Pikmin 4 reached 3.33 million copies sold in the first three quarters of FY24.
