Andreessen Horowitz has launched a $600 million fund to invest in the "next generation of game developers"
Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (aka a16z) is one of the most prominent investors in the gaming market. For example, she invested in Oculus, Zynga, Riot Games and Epic Games. Now a16z has decided to establish Games Fund One, focused exclusively on games.
As a16z explained, she chose games for a reason.
The industry has undergone a major transformation in recent years. Social platforms have turned from simple entertainment games, the business model of which is closer to Instagram than to Super Mario Bros. As an example, the firm cited Fortnite, League of Legends and Roblox. At the same time, according to a16z, many technology investors have not yet realized the full scale of the changes.
Games Fund One is going to invest in three main areas: in game studios, in services like Discord and Twitch, as well as in tools for creating games.
It is not disclosed how much the developers will be able to claim and under what conditions.
