Starbreeze Studios invested $8 million in Psychonauts 2
The author of Payday became the publisher and the largest investor of Psychonauts 2, Timothy Schafer’s new game.
Swedish game developer and publisher Starbreeze Studios has signed an agreement with the studio Double Fine. Under the terms of the deal, the Swedes will invest $8 million in a new Psychonauts 2 studio game. It is assumed that this money will be used to release the game on PC and consoles through digital distribution channels.
The parties agreed that before Starbreeze recovers 100% of its investment, including marketing costs, its percentage of profit will be 85% of the amount after paying deductions to platforms and paying a share to the crowdfunding service Fig, on which $3.8 million was raised for the development of Psychonauts 2. After Starbreeze returns its investment, its share of sales will be 60%. Double Fine retains all rights to the game.
“Starbreeze is a great partner for both Double Fine and our Psychonauts 2 bakers,” said Tim Shafer, president and CEO of Double Fine, known for games such as The Secret of Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango and Broken Age.
In 2016, Starbreeze launched the indie publishing house Starbreeze IndieLabs, which is focused on financing and publishing small projects. Also last year, the Swedish company acquired a 90.5% stake in the Indian outsourcer Dhruva Interactive for $8.5 million.
