Chinese "AI-Slop," another Nintendo hit, and a slew of successful indie games: the highest-grossing releases of April on PC and consoles
After a hectic March, April looks much more lackluster. We will analyze the release and success of Olden Era separately. Today, we present our traditional section analyzing the performance of key titles from the past month — complete with charts and a wealth of data from various markets and platforms.
The games we will discuss in this article:
- Revenue, sales, and other metrics of major April releases: Pragmata, Windrose, Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, and others;
- Data on indie hits and noteworthy new releases: Mouse: P.I. For Hire, Road to Vostok, Replaced, s&box, Far Far West, and others;
- The most anticipated May releases by wishlist count: Forza Horizon 6, 007 First Light, Outbound, Alabaster Dawn, and others.
For evaluating sales, revenue, and other metrics, we relied not only on official data from developers and publishers but also on information from third-party sources. These include Steam charts and data from analytics firms such as Gamalytic, GameDiscoverCo, and Sensor Tower (VG Insights). All figures mentioned in the article cover the period from the release date of a specific game to April 30, 2026.
Last month, 2,183 new titles were released on Steam, which is a 20% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Out of these, 454 were games with enabled profile features (cards, badges, etc.), which surpassed a certain minimum threshold for revenue and user count.
In terms of total releases, April became the third most prolific month in Steam's history. It lagged behind only November 2025 (2,193) and the record-breaking March 2026 (2,472), whose main new releases we analyzed last time.
In April, there were few blockbuster releases; however, there were plenty of smaller successful games. The numbers speak for themselves: 86 titles earned over $100,000, and the gross revenue of 12 projects exceeded $1 million. Out of all the April releases, 238 received more than 100 reviews, and 40 projects surpassed the 1,000 review mark.
Next, we will look at the metrics of the main new releases and complement this information with data from the console markets in Europe (GfK) and Japan (Famitsu).
