Fishlabs has announced layoffs, citing "changing project requirements" as the reason. The job cuts are impacting both the development and support teams
A developer based in Germany, Fishlabs, has recently disclosed job cuts affecting its development and support divisions.
While the exact number of layoffs remains unspecified, the studio cited "changing project requirements and the needs of our clients and internal teams" as the rationale behind this decision. More details can be found in a LinkedIn update.
The company expressed gratitude for the contributions and dedication of the impacted employees, emphasizing that these workforce changes do not reflect the talent or performance of those affected. Fishlabs pledged support for these individuals as they transition from the company.
The studio remains dedicated to ongoing partner projects and its current teams, while its immediate focus is on assisting departing staff members.
In 2023, Fishlabs experienced another round of layoffs, reducing its workforce by 50 positions as part of Embracer Group's restructuring initiative. Fishlabs operates as a subsidiary under Plaion, within Embracer's broader corporate structure.
Established in 2004 by Michael Schade and Christian Lohr, Fishlabs was acquired in 2013 by Plaion, formerly known as Koch Media, after filing for bankruptcy, leading to the elimination of 25 jobs.
Following their departure from Fishlabs, Schade and Lohr initiated Rockfish Games, known for developing the Everspace series, in 2014. Earlier this year, Rockfish Games received an €8 million grant from the German government's €125 million games funding initiative to aid development on their upcoming Everspace shooter.
