Employees at Ubisoft Barcelona have initiated a strike in response to the layoff of 51 staff members
Employees at Ubisoft's studio in Barcelona are planning to strike due to proposed job cuts affecting 51 individuals.
The strikes are being coordinated by the Spanish labor union, La Confederación General del Trabajo. Scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from June 30 until July 17, the strikes were reported in a bulletin to local outlets such as Hobby Consolas. Insider Gaming shared this report in English.
The workforce is pushing for sustained employment through a binding negotiation that guarantees retention for the 51 employees. They are also advocating for job security measures to prevent any further large-scale layoffs in the Barcelona location for at least five years.
Additional demands from the employees include honoring promotions that were previously agreed upon but subsequently stalled by the company. They also seek the option to telecommute 60% of the time to maintain a better work-life balance.
The staff is further requesting a formal evaluation of the studio’s salary enhancement plan and improvements to social benefit offerings.
The job cuts in Barcelona were part of an earlier announcement this year, which also included shutting down operations in Ubisoft's Winnipeg and Belgrade studios. The company intends for the Barcelona branch to concentrate solely on the Rainbow Six series.
These developments are part of a challenging period for Ubisoft, which has been undergoing several years of significant cost reductions. Earlier this January, Ubisoft, headquartered in France, disclosed plans for a "final" cost reduction phase aiming to achieve €200 million in savings.
