Sony has announced a reduction of 292 positions at Bungie, the creator of Destiny
Job reductions are occurring at Bungie, the developer of Destiny, under the management of Sony Interactive Entertainment.
An internal communication, shared on the PlayStation company's website by Studio Business Group CEO Hermen Hulst, indicates a "substantial number" of employees are impacted by these layoffs. This includes the majority of the Destiny team and several Marathon team members. A WARN notice filed with the Employment Security Department of Washington State confirms that 292 employees are being dismissed.
Hulst further mentioned that some employees at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who were supporting Bungie, also face redundancies.
Hulst stated, "Such news is difficult, particularly for talented colleagues whose jobs are affected. This decision came after thoughtful examination and thorough discussions. Alongside Bungie's leadership, we evaluated the studio’s long-term aims, development focus, and needed resources over several months. Various options were considered, but it became apparent that realignment was necessary to match the studio’s resources with its present objectives and ambitions."
Bungie had previously declared they would stop work on Destiny 2. Hulst acknowledged the studio's contributions to the sci-fi shooter as "exceptional." He also noted that Marathon continues to play a vital role in their portfolio, with Sony backing Bungie's ongoing development of the extraction shooter and other prospective endeavors.
In May, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg reported on the anticipated substantial layoffs at Bungie as Destiny 2's development phases out.
PlayStation's acquisition of Bungie took place in 2022 for $3.6 billion, but the acquisition price was later reduced by $765 million in the 2025/26 fiscal year, which equates to 21% of the initial value.
There were reports in 2023 alleging that if Bungie failed to achieve financial goals established post-acquisition, Sony might assume complete control of the studio.
