Media reports: Bungie is facing difficulties. Major layoffs are expected following the end of content support for Destiny 2
Last night, Bungie announced that it will cease releasing content for the looter shooter Destiny 2 — the final update, titled Monument of Triumph, will be released on June 9. As reported by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, some employees will leave the studio as a result.

Schreier was unable to learn exactly how many people will be laid off. However, according to his sources, the scale of the layoffs will be significant.
Schreier's sources added that Destiny 2 could have faced a very different outcome. Bungie discussed options to modify the game to make it more accessible for new users, but none of the ideas proved promising enough. As a result, at the beginning of 2026, the studio management decided to halt work on the project and redirect resources to Marathon.
Schreier writes that the initial sales of Marathon did not meet Bungie's expectations. The studio is hopeful that the game will attract more users over time and eventually become popular. Currently, Marathon is their only active project, making its success crucial for the team's future.
It is reported that simultaneously, Bungie is contemplating concepts for several new games, including within the Destiny universe. However, as Schreier notes, given current market conditions, there are no guarantees that Sony will approve any of them. Notably, at least for now, Bungie does not plan to immediately start developing Destiny 3 — it is too expensive.
