Polyarc Games, a developer specializing in virtual reality, is experiencing layoffs that have impacted an undisclosed number of employees

Polyarc Games, a VR development studio based in Seattle, has initiated layoffs across the company. The developers of the well-regarded game Moss did not reveal the exact number of employees laid off.
The studio attributed the layoffs to a failure to secure financing following the termination of a significant project. As stated by Polyarc on LinkedIn, the decision resulted in a considerable downsizing. They acknowledged the impact on their team, expressing gratitude: "Your work, creativity, and care mattered."
GamesIndustry.biz has sought additional details regarding the workforce reduction.
Established in 2015 by Tam Armstrong, Danny Bulla, and Chris Alderson—former developers at Bungie—Polyarc raised $3.5 million a year later to create Moss. The company received an additional $9 million in Series B funding in 2020 aimed at venturing into augmented reality, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.
The layoffs at Polyarc are part of a larger trend within the virtual reality sector. Meta, for instance, cut 10% of its Reality Labs staff earlier this year, resulting in the closure of several VR studios like Twisted Pixel Games, Sanzaru Games, and Armature Studio. More recent developments saw Meta laying off an additional 700 employees, which affected various units within the company, including Reality Labs. According to a Meta representative, the company frequently reorganizes teams to maintain focus on their objectives, providing new opportunities when feasible for impacted employees.
