Following the challenging launch of Highguard, Wildlight Entertainment has announced layoffs, with "most of the team" departing.
Wildlight Entertainment, the team behind Highguard, has recently implemented workforce reductions.
In a social media update, the company stated that they will retain a dedicated team to continue working on the free-to-play shooter.
The statement expressed that, despite the challenging decision to let go of some staff, the remaining core developers will persist in enhancing the game.
The company conveyed pride in their collaborative achievements and expressed appreciation for both new and returning players.
A former employee noted that a significant portion of the workforce was impacted by the layoffs.
Former level designer Alex Graner expressed disappointment on LinkedIn, reflecting on the unreleased content he anticipated.
GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to Wildlight for details on the exact number of employees affected.
Previously, Wildlight's CEO and founder, Dusty Welch, remarked on the hopes for a better reception of Highguard after its debut.
Welch also discussed the reception following the game's unveiling at The Game Awards and the minimal promotion before its launch on January 27, 2026.
He remarked, "A different trailer could have better illustrated the game's unique elements. That's on us, but our team is strong."
Jason McCord, the design and creative director, added, "The strategy was to reveal briefly, then allow the game itself to be the next focus.
"Regardless of the initial response, the approach would have remained consistent. The essence is in experiencing the game."
