Square Enix reveals significant layoffs as part of a "restructuring" strategy, which involves withdrawing development efforts from "overseas"
Square Enix is initiating a major overhaul by reallocating its resources away from international development studios, placing over 100 roles in jeopardy.
An internal document, now available on Square Enix's website, reveals the company is restructuring its global publishing division to enhance efficiency and strengthen its global distribution capabilities.
As reported by IGN, this move aims to consolidate its publishing efforts and prioritize game development within Japan.
Notifications of potential layoffs have reportedly been sent to employees in the UK and the U.S. Although the total number of affected positions in the U.S. has not been disclosed, IGN notes that 137 roles may be cut in the UK.
Square Enix explained, "To enhance development capabilities on a Group-wide level and optimize resource use to maximize the value from our IPs, we reviewed the development pipeline. Following this, we decided to close overseas development studios and concentrate development activities in Japan."
In a media statement, Square Enix commented: "We are reorganizing our North American and European operations to bolster our development foundation and create a globally unified marketing strategy. This difficult decision follows extensive review and analysis by our leadership to ensure the Group's sustainable growth."
The company expressed appreciation for the departing staff's contributions and emphasized their commitment to supporting them through the transition with dignity and respect.
The exact number of jobs at risk under these new plans remains unconfirmed by Square Enix.
