Valnet has recently downsized several positions at TheGamer, impacting the entire features team and various other staff members. Although the exact number of layoffs remains unspecified, it is confirmed through social media posts by former employees such as news editor Rhiannon Bevan and features lead Jade King. TheGamer's staff list on its site remains outdated, with no updates since at least July 2025, despite occurring cuts.
These layoffs have followed Valnet's acquisition of the game and pop culture publication Polygon earlier this year. The day the purchase was made public, many veteran employees either announced their layoffs or disclosed their decision to leave due to the acquisition.
Valnet, established in 2012, manages over 27 brands spanning various sectors like entertainment, technology, and gaming, among others. The company boasts over 300 million visitors every month, accumulating 5 billion sessions annually.
Statistics from Press Engine, as shared with VGC, indicate that over 1200 journalists in the gaming sector have exited the media industry during the past two years, with no return reported.
