Starbreeze has announced the cancellation of Project Baxter, resulting in layoffs affecting around 44 employees
Project Baxter, the Dungeons & Dragons game developed by Starbreeze Entertainment, will no longer proceed as the company has decided to cancel it.
This move comes after a comprehensive strategic evaluation, where it was determined that channeling resources towards enhancing the Payday franchise would be more beneficial for the company.
While some team members from Project Baxter will transition to other roles within Starbreeze, about 44 employees and contractors are expected to face job losses.
Speaking to Game Developer, the company mentioned the inability to specify the exact number affected due to ongoing discussions with unions.
The cancellation is predicted to result in a non-cash impairment of roughly SEK 255 million, equivalent to $27.2 million, in the third quarter of 2025.
CEO Adolf Kristjansson noted, "By prioritizing our investment and resource allocation towards the Payday franchise, our aim is to deliver faster, provide more content, and strengthen Starbreeze’s leadership in the heisting game genre."
Expressing gratitude, Kristjansson stated, "We are thankful to the Baxter team for their dedication and innovation and to Wizards of the Coast for their support."
"Despite the choice to halt this project, the work done on Baxter will continue to influence Payday and the future pathways of Starbreeze. Concentrating on Payday offers the company and our workforce the best prospects for achievement," he concluded.
