LocalThunk postpones Balatro update to steer clear of "crunch mode"

The anticipated Balatro 1.1 update has been postponed indefinitely. LocalThunk, the game's developer, shared that they are now working on the game only during their free time.
In a blog entry titled "I’m Slow," published on September 12, 2025, LocalThunk announced that the Balatro 1.1 update will not be released in 2025 as originally scheduled. They expressed regret over not fulfilling this commitment.
LocalThunk acknowledged a mistake in initially announcing a release date for the update. These reflections come after experiencing significant pressure since the game's public release in 2023, a situation that continued even post-launch.
Following Balatro's initial release in February 2024, LocalThunk immediately began work on the 1.0.1 balance patch and a mobile version. By the time the mobile version launched in September 2024, the developer was experiencing severe burnout.
LocalThunk described taking a break from development for several months, slowly returning to it at the start of 2025, but this time as a personal project rather than a full-time commitment.
The developer expressed a preference for avoiding the intense pressure typical of professional game development and emphasized maintaining a healthier, more sustainable approach to work.
While they still consider game creation a hobby, the developer is determined not to revert to previous high-pressure working methods. Balatro’s 1.1 update will be released once it's fully ready.
LocalThunk reassured fans of their ongoing dedication to Balatro by mentioning their enthusiasm for achieving all the game’s challenges again after the update is completed.
Balatro, launched on February 24, 2024, achieved significant commercial success, earning $1 million within eight hours. It also secured recognition at the Game Developers' Choice Awards 2025 and the BAFTA Game Awards 2025.
In a May 2025 interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Playstack CEO Harvey Elliott remarked on Balatro's impact, emphasizing that the game's success showcases the potential of individual creators in the gaming industry.
