There have been layoffs at the studio of the creators of Civilization

Firaxis Games has lost part of its staff. The layoffs were first reported on social media by the affected developers themselves, and later confirmed by 2K Games—the studio's parent company.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VII

In a comment to the Game Developer portal, 2K Games representatives stated that Firaxis Games is undergoing restructuring. Ultimately, this optimization of processes will enhance its creativity, flexibility, and cooperation.

While 2K Games' statement did not specify, it is possible that the shake-up was due to subpar performance of Sid Meier’s Civilization VII. A month ago, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick admitted that the game's launch was weak. However, he immediately stated that the situation is gradually improving, and over time the seventh "Civilization" should achieve success.

2K Games representatives did not disclose the number of employees laid off. According to sources from Game Developer, dozens of people were affected by the cuts.

The last time layoffs were reported at Firaxis Games was in May 2023. According to media reports, 30 employees were let go from the studio at that time.
