1047 Games has decided to revert Splitgate 2 to its beta phase and has announced a new series of layoffs
1047 Games has declared that the second edition of its free first-person shooter, Splitgate 2, will revert to a beta phase. This shift is accompanied by another series of layoffs at the studio.
In a post on X, dated July 22 and endorsed by studio co-founders Ian Proulx and Nicholas Bagamian, it was revealed that due to player responses, Splitgate 2 would go back into beta status.
The co-founders conveyed in their message, "Your feedback has reached us loud and clear. Our ambitions for Splitgate 2 led us to overextend."
They further explained, "Returning to the beta will allow us to work until early next year on reconstructing significant aspects of the game to highlight the features that made Splitgate unique. This involves revamping progression from scratch, increasing the number of portals on maps, simplifying the monetization approach, revisiting traditional game modes that have been requested, and more updates that we will discuss soon."
In a conversation with Polygon, Proulx stated the most significant modification involves developing the game in conjunction with the community, paying careful attention to player feedback and participating in playtesting.
The studio expressed on X, "We are counting on your support more than ever. We are reconnecting not just with the essence of our creation but also with the process—collaborating with you, our community. This entails more playtests, surveys, and truly prioritizing the community."
To carry out the necessary updates for Splitgate 2, 1047 Games disclosed that they will proceed with another round of layoffs, shortly after reducing its workforce in June, as covered by GamesIndustry.biz.
The X post explained, "We face the hard choice to decrease certain roles and refocus our resources on this rework for Splitgate. It is a painful decision, affecting our teammates and friends, who have significantly contributed to our current status. We are providing severance and job placement support, striving to assist them during the transition, and hope to reinstate them in the future."
GamesIndustry.biz has reached out to 1047 Games to get details about the June layoffs and anticipations regarding the upcoming downsizing.
Moreover, to preserve the maximum number of team members, the studio will also be discontinuing the servers for the original Splitgate next month, but the rollout of Splitgate 2's Chapter 3 is set to proceed as scheduled.
