The developer of MindsEye has confirmed layoffs as the company shifts its focus toward updates and performance optimization for the MindsEye platform

The development studio Build a Rocket Boy, known for its game MindsEye, has disclosed a decision that led to workforce reductions.

The initial reception to their debut game was largely negative, with both reviews and players highlighting significant issues with optimization and performance, causing distress within the company as revealed in a Discord communication.

Though IGN and regional redundancy laws suggest that more than 100 employees could potentially face lay-offs, the company hasn’t confirmed exact numbers.

In a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, Build A Rocket Boy acknowledged painful but necessary internal shifts signaling possible job losses while striving to relocate affected staff whenever possible.

They stressed that the decision was challenging and promised a process driven by transparency and respect towards their team. Details of the changes will be communicated internally in the upcoming weeks.

The launch of MindsEye marked a pivotal moment for the studio. They are determined to enhance and support their community by focusing on updating MindsEye and strengthening the company’s prospects, despite setbacks.

The studio recently saw its chief legal and financial officers depart just before the game's release on June 10.

Across the gaming sector this year, there have been significant job reductions with over 2300 roles affected. Companies like Freejam, Splash Damage, and several others have enacted downsizing measures. Companies like Ubisoft and People Can Fly are also among those taking similar steps, facing industry-wide challenges.
