Financial reports from NetEase indicate that Marvel Rivals surpassed 40 million players prior to the layoffs
The free-to-play game Marvel Rivals has attracted more than 40 million players, achieving the number one spot on Steam's top sellers list.
NetEase's recent financial report disclosed to investors that the company launched several major games worldwide, enhancing its position in various genres. This announcement followed closely on the heels of layoffs at a US studio supporting Marvel Rivals.
NetEase stated that Marvel Rivals quickly became the top seller globally on Steam soon after its release on December 6, with over 10 million users registering within the first three days, rising to more than 40 million game-wide.
Its Season 1 update, introduced in January 2025, spurred another peak in popularity, topping both sales and gameplay charts worldwide on Steam.
The company's games and associated services experienced a 1.5% revenue increase in the final quarter of the fiscal year, reaching $2.9 billion, bringing annual revenues to $11.5 billion, an increase from $11.2 billion in 2023.
During the fiscal year 2024, online games constituted approximately 96% of the segment’s total revenues, up from 92.9% in 2023.
Revenue from mobile gaming accounted for around 72.7% of online games revenue for fiscal year 2024, compared to 75.2% in 2023. The shift is attributed to higher earnings from PC titles such as Naraka: Bladepoint and various licensed games.
NetEase’s studio Worlds Untold announced a pause in its operations in December, despite being launched in 2023.
Moreover, NetEase reportedly closed down Ouka Studios, the developer of Visions of Mana, in August, with its director Ryosuke Yoshida leaving to join Square Enix.
