ProbablyMonsters has announced layoffs affecting "about 50 people" following the cancellation of its Battle Barge project
Around 50 employees have been let go by ProbablyMonsters.
Mic Marvin, a senior technical artist, shared the news of the layoffs on LinkedIn, noting they were among those affected.
Other individuals, including Battle Barge designer Ed Byrne—laid off coincidentally on the same date of their previous job loss at Bungie—senior environment artist Carol T., 3D character artist Tamara Corbett, and 3D character animator Dalton Downing, also confirmed their departures.
ProbablyMonsters, which previously owned the Concord studio Firewalk before its purchase by Sony in 2023, informed Game Developer that it is restructuring to focus on smaller, more agile teams and projects, aiming to align with player and market demands.
The company expressed empathy for those affected, acknowledging the challenges of the current gaming landscape as they remain an independent entity.
Recently, Sony revealed the closure of Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios.
Hermen Hulst, CEO of Studio Business Group at Sony Interactive Entertainment, communicated to staff that after a review of the organization's game offerings and project outcomes to align with business priorities, the decision to close Neon Koi and Firewalk Studios was made.
