Media: Layoffs at Bungie were planned in advance, and they would have occurred even in the case of great success of The Final Shape

Former Bungie employees told journalist Stephen Totilo of Game File that the studio's management had long been preparing for massive layoffs. The decision was made months ago.

Destiny 2: The Final Shape

It is reported that Bungie had to part ways with hundreds of people to stop operating at a loss. While many employees hoped that the layoffs would be canceled if the expansion The Final Shape for Destiny 2 sold well, the management understood that this would not be enough to save the studio.

According to Totilo's sources, The Final Shape received critical acclaim but did not become a major hit. It sold worse than the previous expansion, Lightfall. It’s worth noting that this statement somewhat contradicts the claim made by Bungie CEO Pete Parsons, who reported earlier about the success of The Final Shape.

Additionally, one former Bungie employee told Totilo that the studio would have gone bankrupt had it not been acquired by Sony in 2022.
