The British actors' union supported SAG-AFTRA's decision. Nevertheless, it will not go on strike
The UK's actors' union, Equity, announced that it fully stands in solidarity with the US Screen Actors Guild SAG-AFTRA, which has started a strike against gaming companies. In the UK, there are also some concerns about the conditions of collaboration with developers.
Like the members of the American Guild, Equity members are concerned about the lack of restrictions on the use of artificial intelligence in game development. They are also dissatisfied with the salary levels of actors in the UK. The union's statement highlights that gaming companies benefit from doing business in the country—in 2022 alone, they received a tax rebate totaling nearly £200 million. However, the salaries of British actors involved in game development have not been increasing and do not reflect the real value of their work.
Despite everything, Equity will not conduct its own strike. This is because it is prohibited by UK law. Additionally, unlike their American colleagues, Equity has not entered into collective bargaining agreements with major gaming companies.
