The creators of Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius will lay off 11% of their staff

The Japanese company Gumi, known in the West for mobile games like Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, plans to part ways with 80 employees. It has decided to downsize due to escalating losses.

In its financial report, Gumi reported that its operating losses for the last year amounted to 5 billion yen ($32.4 million). A year earlier, it reported a profit of 447 million yen ($2.9 million). One of the reasons for the losses is the failure of the mobile game Aster Tatariqus.

Gumi stated that it is not forcibly laying off people, but offering them the option to resign voluntarily with all necessary payouts. Currently, Gumi employs 689 people.

Analyst Serkan Toto from Kantan Games mentioned on social media that the Gumi case is a rarity in Japan. This is due to the fact that, because of the specifics of Japanese law, it is extremely difficult for local companies to conduct mass layoffs.
