One of the best comic book games with a lot of bugs: what the press writes about Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was released today. Despite the initial skepticism, the game exceeded the expectations of many critics. Some even call it “the new standard for comic book video games.” However, there were some negative aspects. Most of all complain about the abundance of bugs and too simple fighting.

Briefly about the game

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is a new 3D action game developed by the Canadian studio Eidos Montréal. The game was the result of a partnership that the authors of Deus Ex: Human Revolution concluded with Marvel Entertainment in 2017.

The project was officially announced at E3 in June. After the first videos and gameplay shows, many players turned out to be skeptical about Guardians of the Galaxy. This was largely due to the failure of Marvel’s Avengers.

Eidos was just helping Crystal Dynamics to work on the Avengers game, and Square Enix was the publisher of both titles. However, Guardians of the Galaxy actually turned out to be fundamentally different from the Avengers.

The Guardians of the Galaxy game is not a loot shooter, but a full—fledged single-player adventure. The main focus here is on the plot and characters, as well as their interaction with each other.

The player controls Peter Quill and can give commands to other members of the squad. Each of the heroes has their own set of skills, which they can also combine to make joint attacks.

As a result, Guardians of the Galaxy received good ratings from the press. The average score on Metacritic was 81 points for the PS5 version and 83 points for the Xbox Series X. The lowest scores so far for the PC version are 77 points.

Opinions of critics

Guardians of the Galaxy received the highest score from the PlayStation Universe portal. The publication rated the title by 9.5 points, calling it “the new standard for video games based on comics.”

Eidos Montréal has made one of the best superhero games. Other studios should adopt her focus on creating the world and characters of the characters. Attention should also be paid to exciting battles in which RPG elements are combined with the ability to give strategic commands, vivid visual effects and animations. The most impressive thing is how this game is written — this applies not only to the Guardians, but also to the rest of the characters.

PlayStation Universe

The Game Informer portal gave Guardians of the Galaxy 8.5 points. Most of all, the publication praised the characters, dialogues and charming world. However, the author of the review had mixed impressions of the gameplay.

As a fan of comics and movies, I really liked Eidos Montréal’s unique take on this superhero team. This adventure is worth paying attention to because of the continuous banter of the characters over each other – even though the gameplay cannot reveal the true potential of the team for too long.

Game Informer

IGN also spoke positively about Guardians of the Galaxy, rating it 8 points. The author of the review noted a number of bugs and the simplicity of the action, but in general was satisfied with the developed world and characters.

The combat system and level design are relatively simple, but still they are invariably fascinating. However, it is the mutual relations and humor of the characters that do not let you get bored as the plot develops. Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t going to change your idea of gaming, but it’s another example of how exciting a linear adventure with a completed single-player campaign can be.

IGN

PCGamesN gave Guardians of the Galaxy 7 points. According to the publication, the overall impression is spoiled by a relatively simple action and various bugs. The game also features a number of visual glitches that break the immersion.

Guardians of the Galaxy is dominated by a quirky tone and characters that Marvel fans are waiting for. Otherwise, the strong visual side and presentation are overshadowed by too many visual glitches. The game is worth paying attention to if you can put up with bugs and a repetitive action.

PCGamesN

The same assessment of the game was given by the PC Gamer portal. The main disadvantages of the project, again, were numerous technical problems. Several times the author of the review encountered unpleasant crashes, including loss of game progress and various freezes.

Guardians of the Galaxy desperately wants to be a vibrant interstellar adventure worthy of this multimedia franchise. The game manages to achieve this thanks to its story, voice acting and surprisingly accurate styling for the 80s. It’s just a pity that the technical part does not match these ambitions.

Russian publications generally spoke positively about Guardians of the Galaxy. One of the most positive reviews was written by the DTF portal. The pros of the project recorded the optimal duration, the absence of signs of games-services, an exciting plot and soundtrack. Among the disadvantages are small bugs and protracted fights in the middle of the game.

Dead Space, Alien Isolation, Horizon Zero Dawn… How many successful examples have there been in recent years when the studio abruptly changed its profile and did something truly magnificent. “Guardians of the Galaxy” can be included in this series without the slightest doubt. Yes, there is only a powerful engine left from Deus Ex, but if we talk about games in the spirit of Mass Effect or under the Marvel license, then the developers from Eidos suddenly got into the top league.

The 3DNews portal gave Guardians of the Galaxy 7.5 points, noting the optional pumping and the protracted nature of some episodes.

Eidos Montréal has a fascinating story about the Guardians of the Galaxy. Give the characters the faces and voices of Hollywood actors, and the project can easily be mistaken for the third film from Gunn. Similar humor, reckless atmosphere… only for some reason all this is stretched to fifteen hours by hook or by crook.

The Disgusting Men portal noted that the atmosphere of the game in places strongly resembles the famous suicide mission from Mass Effect 2. According to the author of the review, Guardians of the Galaxy looks no worse than Sony exclusives. But the publication called the situation with the technical part of the game “critical”. Among the main bugs are heroes falling through the ground, loss of progress and intermittent animations.

Even despite the bugs, Guardian of the Galaxy is a pleasant surprise. In the era of endless openworlds and game services trying to integrate into your life for at least a year, such a collected adventure without a husk really surprises – and this is a licensed game! It’s not a shame to put such a thing on the same shelf with “Spider-Man” from Insomniac, and I want to see the sequel as soon as possible.
