Facepunch Studios has announced that by the end of this year, its s&box platform will transition to a free-to-play model. This shift in strategy aims to focus on promoting the top-performing games rather than offering a wide array.

According to a post by founder Garry Newman on the s&box website, the platform struggles with popularity and user retention. Newman pointed out that while the studio has concentrated on the engine's development, the ultimate goal is to sell a game rather than just an engine.

Newman acknowledged that charging an entrance fee along with selling skins could deter users, stating, "We don't need the entrance fee, we need players."

Those who have already purchased the game will receive exclusive items in their Steam inventory, with additional rewards for those who invested at a higher price point.

The challenge of discovery was highlighted, noting that AI's convenience for creating games leaves users faced with too many options.

Newman remarked that the concept of a "Netflix for games" is ineffective, as players prefer discovering games via recommendations, active multiplayer sessions, and online influencers.

He proposed that s&box should focus on delivering high-quality, popular games, with human judgment taking precedence over AI capabilities.

In line with this new direction, Facepunch has switched its Play Fund to a more selective approval process, discouraging certain types of games and removing unsuitable titles from the fund.

Additionally, Facepunch plans to integrate more closely with the Steam Workshop, moving away from its current backend systems, which Newman admitted haven't been efficient. Maps are now being tested and published on the Workshop.

The studio's intention is to evolve the Sandbox game to not only match but exceed Garry's Mod, introducing more interactive elements such as NPCs, vehicles, and customizable features. The Citizen model has been replaced in favor of a default human model.

In a related update, the studio reported a reduction in download sizes, with the top 50 games reducing in size by 22% following republishing efforts.
