Podcast: Game designer of classic DOOM and Quake about modern games

We share a curious podcast. One of the authors of DOOM and Quake, John Carmack, discussed the modern industry with the host Joe Rogan Experience.

John Carmack is the co—founder and former game designer of id Software, as well as one of the creators of Oculus Rift. For two and a half hours, he shares his thoughts about the gaming market, comparing the modern approach to game design with the earlier one.

He is optimistic about the industry, although he makes a number of reservations. For example, he is convinced that focus groups deprive many games of their specific taste. Although when developing modern AAA with their gigantic budgets, you can’t do without focus groups, Carmack said.

According to 80lvl, the podcast also talked about the “extraordinary efforts” that are being spent on development. “Now they are striving for the elaboration of details and the highest quality at all possible levels,” said Carmack. — There is even a feeling that now game development is so expensive (sometimes it costs hundreds of millions of dollars) that their creators have to be conservatives.”
