84% of smartphones sold in Russia in the first quarter of 2014 are running Android

5.3 million smartphones were sold in Russia in the first three months of 2014, J'son & Partners Consulting announced today. Most of them – 84% — run on the Android operating system.

Smartphones account for 57% of the mobile phone market (63% worldwide). The replacement of the "tubes" is not so fast, because, according to analysts, smartphones are expensive in Russia.

This is a strange statement, given that in Russia the official price, for example, of the iPhone is lower than the European one, and Russian operators offer interesting solutions, whose cost sometimes is below $ 100.

Anyway, the average price of a smartphone in Russia today is $258. This allowed J&P to state that the influence of high prices as a factor negatively affecting the dynamics of distribution is decreasing.

Out of curiosity:

  • Gadgets based on Bada and Symbian have disappeared from sales, so the current Russian market is divided between Android, iOS and Windows Phone;
  • 22% of the smartphone market was accounted for in the 1st quarter of 2014 by devices whose price is below $100;
  • The share of smartphones with LTE is already 15%.

These factors allow us to talk about the following obvious things:

  1. Despite the fact that Windows Phone is an unsuccessful platform, this is not a reason to abandon it if you use development tools that allow you to quickly port a project from iOS/Android, since Microsoft OS downloads may well generate.
  2. The last thing to think about the capabilities of mobile flagships is because only the product that works well, including on budget devices, can become truly massive.
  3. The availability of LTE is still small, so it's too early to rush and do projects weighing 200 megabytes.
