In September, Marvel's Wolverine topped U.S. video game sales, recording the highest monthly earnings for a Sony release since Helldivers 2.
Sony maintained strong momentum in hardware sales, with the PlayStation 5 dominating both unit and dollar sales figures as per Circana statistics.
Consumer spending on the PS5 surged 43% compared to the previous year, and unit sales increased by 22%, marking the highest share for Sony in hardware dollars since May 2025.
The total hardware expenditure rose by 12%, reaching $362 million in September, which helped counterbalance a 12% drop in sales for the Nintendo Switch 2 and a 2% decline for the Xbox Series X|S.
The Xbox Series X|S experienced a 27% decline in unit sales in the U.S. last month, setting a new September low for Xbox Ecosystem console sales. The Switch 2 also saw a 14% decrease in units sold.
Spending on total gaming content fell by 2% to $4.2 billion during September, driven by a 14% drop in mobile gaming. However, spending on consoles increased by 8%, and PC expenditures rose by 27%.
Eight new titles entered the U.S. sales chart in September. Marvel's Wolverine not only surpassed NBA 2K27, moving it to the second position, but also outpaced EA Sports FC 27.
Although NBA 2K27 dropped in ranking, it nonetheless became the leading game in sales for 2026, year-to-date, overtaking Resident Evil Requiem.
Rounding out the Top 5 were Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave and The Blood of the Dawnwalker. Additional new releases for September included Wardogs, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Halloween: The Game, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.
Total projected spending across video game content, hardware, and accessories saw a 1% decrease to $4.8 billion in September.
