Projections for the sales of Grand Theft Auto 6: how many units might Rockstar move at a price point of $80?
The release date for GTA 6 is set, and the price has been revealed at $79.99. A special edition will be available for $100, offering extra content for single-player mode. The game will primarily be digital, with the physical version only containing a download code.
Industry observers are keenly watching, speculating on how many copies will sell, especially after 13 years of anticipation, with other releases clearing the way to avoid competition. Analysts were consulted for their sales forecasts, now that the pricing details are confirmed.
According to Joost van Dreunen from Aldora, the game might match its predecessor's success, selling up to 38 million copies and generating over $3 billion within the first year. Piers Harding-Rolls from Ampere Analysis forecasts potential sales of 30-35 million units by year-end.
Gareth Sutcliffe from Enders Analysis suggests that sales could surpass those estimates, predicting a "blow out scenario" with sales exceeding 50 million units in the first year and possibly nearing 60 million, which would be unprecedented.
Rhys Elliott from Alinea Analytics wouldn't be surprised to see sales of around 30 million in the initial week, aiming for 50 million by 2027. He notes that reaching a fifth of lifetime sales quickly isn't unrealistic, given GTA 5's past launch success, especially with a larger current console base.
The role of console hardware could significantly impact launch success. Sony is expected to be a major partner, promoting the game's performance on the PS5. However, there is no mention yet of a hardware bundle, which is typically standard in such high-profile releases. Concerns about ongoing PS5 price hikes could influence this strategy.
Hardware availability challenges have previously affected products like the Steam Machine. These issues might restrict gamers' access at launch, although a well-priced console bundle from Sony could counteract this, especially if PS5 prices rise again due to economic pressures.
