In 2024, the revenue of the Belgian gambling market fell for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic

The Belgian gambling market regulator has published data on the legal segment of the sector for 2024. It reported that in 2024, revenue declined for the first time since 2020. It fell by 4.86% to €1.61 billion.

The main pressure was on the land-based gambling segment, whose revenue dropped by 7.59% to €690.41 million. The online gambling segment, which accounted for 57.1% of the market's revenue, also decreased—by 2.7% to €919.1 million.

Meanwhile, revenue from casinos rose by 7.32% to €638.4 million, with about three-quarters coming from online casinos. In contrast, revenue from slots decreased by 11.95% to €384.75 million, mainly due to a sharp drop of 23.8% in online slots. Revenue from sports betting fell by 6.59% to €364.3 million.

The regulator noted that the market could have been affected by regulatory changes introduced in 2023: a ban on using multiple types of licenses on one site, raising the minimum age for gambling from 18 to 21, and a phased ban on gambling advertising.
