According to sales figures, Sony's PS5 ports are experiencing a decline in their audience share on PC. This trend is attributed primarily to the timing of the releases

An analysis from Newzoo, featured in GamesIndustry.biz, provides insights following a Bloomberg article reporting that Sony is scaling back on releasing PS5 exclusives on PC. This decision appears to be partly due to lower-than-expected sales figures for certain titles on the platform. The study concludes that Sony's strategy of delaying PC ports until well after the PS5 release could be a constraining factor for its audience reach on the PC market.

The company released most PC versions after their initial PS5 launches, with the exception of "Helldivers 2" in 2024. This strategy resulted in a smaller portion of the PC gaming audience engaging with their titles compared to simultaneous multiplatform releases. The trend is not unique to Sony and affects all publishers using a similar staggered release approach.

Manu Rosier, Director of Market Intelligence at Newzoo, states, "Data reveals that PlayStation titles arriving on PC post-console release garner about 13% of total players in the initial three months of both releases." By contrast, AAA titles debuting simultaneously on both platforms see higher PC engagement rates at approximately 44% during the same timeframe.

"Releasing a PC version years post-console debut allows the primary platform to capture the majority of early lifecycle demand."

Rosier further explains that the decline in PC audience share is noticeable in Sony's more recent releases. Initial PlayStation games launched on PC saw robust engagement, with "Horizon Zero Dawn" reaching 22% PC share (~4M lifetime players), "God of War" (2018) at 14% (~3.5M), and "Marvel’s Spider-Man" also at 14% (~3.8M). In contrast, later titles like "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" and "Horizon Forbidden West" secured merely 8% and 7% on PC, respectively. A unique case is "Ghost of Tsushima," achieving an 11% PC share (~2.1M players) as it was the franchise's inaugural PC edition.

The pivotal takeaway suggests that the timing of releases substantially influences player engagement on PC platforms. Sony's revised strategy aims to counteract past declines, although the company has not publicly elaborated on these changes. Simultaneously, in the wider gaming landscape, a management shift at Xbox could signal new strategic directions. Xbox's studio head Craig Duncan has hinted at pursuing a strategy of simultaneous releases across different platforms. Additionally, the future Xbox console, codenamed Project Helix, is reported to support PC games.
