In 2025, the Epic Store experienced an unprecedented player count and a significant 57% surge in third-party game sales, surpassing $400 million
According to a blog post from Epic, the Epic Games Store witnessed a 57% year-over-year growth in revenue from third-party games, alongside a 4% rise in time spent on these games, culminating in a record 78 million monthly active users in December. The platform now offers over 6,000 games.
Player spending on third-party titles reached $400 million (£293 million), excluding in-game purchases via third-party stores where Epic does not charge a commission. The total store expenditure for the year was noted to be $1.16 billion (£847 million).
In 2025, the most popular PC games on Epic's platform included Fortnite, Wuthering Waves, Honkai Star Rail, Rocket League, and Genshin Impact. The next tier featured titles like EA SPORTS FC 26, Zenless Zone Zero, GTA 5, Dead by Daylight, and Infinity Nikki. The company did not release specific sales data for each game.
Even though there was a rise in monthly active users in December, largely due to a giveaway of Hogwarts Legacy, the total player hours decreased by 14% year-over-year, as first-party games saw diminishing engagement. Conversely, time spent on third-party games rose by 4%, reaching 2.78 billion hours.
Epic highlighted that its initiative to distribute free games each month yielded a "measurable halo effect" across the broader PC gaming ecosystem. This was demonstrated by a 40% increase in concurrent users on Steam when a game was free on the Epic store. In 2025, players obtained 662 million games through this program, with over 77% of these titles achieving peak concurrent user counts during promotional periods.
Developer engagement in the Epic First Run initiative achieved new heights, allowing developers to obtain 100% of their game revenue for six months when exclusively launched on the Epic Games Store. Although participation levels were high, specific metrics were not shared. In October 2025, a Web Shops service for PC and mobile was introduced, offering the first $1 million in revenue commission-free to developers before moving to an 88/22 revenue split.
Despite these efforts, the Epic Games Store still trails behind Steam in terms of revenue. A November study indicated that for most developers, Steam accounted for over 75% of their income.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Epic Games Store's general manager, Steve Allison, clarified that they do not aim to "topple" Steam. "Our growth is not about the exclusives," he commented. "Our growth is going to come from shifting the share of sales on games shipping in both places."
