In 2025, the Nintendo Switch 2 has maintained its record-breaking momentum in Japan, achieving sales of 3.78 million units, which positions it as the fastest-selling console in the country's history.
Analyzing the latest figures from Famitsu and highlighted by VGC, the Switch 2 dominated the market, comprising over half of Japan's console sales during the past year.
The classic Nintendo Switch followed closely, selling 1.52 million units. PlayStation 5 sold 879,204 units, while the Xbox Series X|S consisted of 31,226 units. PlayStation 4 trailed with 1,807 units.
Even with a newly introduced budget-friendly model exclusive to Japan, PS5 sales saw a significant decrease of 60% in 2025 compared to the previous year, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz.
The Nintendo Switch 2 marked a record-setting launch in Japan, as it sold nearly one million units within its first week, making it the largest console debut in Japan's history.
Globally, within the initial four months post-launch, its sales exceeded 10.36 million units, setting a new record for a Nintendo platform.
In the realm of physical games, Nintendo has dominated Famitsu's bestsellers list, securing nine of the top ten positions for 21 consecutive years.
