Sony wrote off $204 million due to the impairment of Bungie's assets and other details from the company's quarterly report
On September 30, Sony concluded the second quarter of fiscal year 2025, releasing a report of the results. Below are the main indicators from the company's gaming division, which suggest that Bungie is facing some difficulties.
Destiny 2
- From July to September 2025, Sony's gaming division earned 1.1 trillion yen (7.2 billion dollars), which is a 4% increase compared to the previous year.
- As usual, video games contributed the majority of the revenue—629.3 billion yen (4.08 billion dollars), a 2.7% increase from the previous year. Of this, 42.63% was generated from microtransactions and other in-game purchases.
- Revenue from console and hardware sales amounted to 230.9 billion yen (1.5 billion dollars), reflecting a 5.8% year-on-year growth.
- Revenue from gaming services rose by 13.6% to 182.68 billion yen (1.18 billion dollars).
- Despite the revenue growth, the operating profit of the division dropped by 13% to 120.4 billion yen (781 million dollars). According to Sony, this was largely due to the recognition of losses from the impairment of Bungie's assets totaling 31.5 billion yen (204 million dollars). The company did not elaborate on the write-down, only noting that all assets are related to Destiny 2.
- Another factor that contributed to the decreased profit was the adjustment of previously capitalized development expenses amounting to 18.3 billion yen (119 million dollars). Sony stated that if it were not for this and the write-down due to Destiny 2, the profit would have increased by 23% instead of declining.
Revenue, operating profit, and adjusted OIBDA of Sony's gaming division for the second quarter of fiscal years 2024 and 2025
- During the quarter, Sony sold 3.9 million PlayStation 5 units, bringing total console sales to 84.2 million devices.
- Quarterly game sales reached 80.3 million copies, of which 6.3 million were Sony's proprietary games.
- As of September 30, 2025, the monthly active user base of the PlayStation Network service reached 119 million people—3 million more year-on-year but 4 million less compared to the previous quarter.
