The release of Borderlands 4 and sales of the Switch 2 have contributed to an increase in US gaming expenditures, reaching $4.8 billion, according to the US Monthly Charts
In September, the U.S. gaming market saw a 10% rise in consumer spending, reaching $4.8 billion, largely attributed to the strong debut of "Borderlands 4" and sales of Switch 2 hardware. The latest entry in the "Borderlands" series topped Circana's charts and secured the third spot in year-to-date sales starting January 5, 2025.
"Borderlands 4" boasted a 30% higher sales figure than its 2019 predecessor, "Borderlands 3," marking the most successful launch month for any game in the series. It was also the first in the series to debut as the top-selling game in the U.S. during its release month.
Another successful launch was "Ghost of Yōtei," which entered the charts following its release on October 2. This title from Sucker Punch Productions took the fourth spot overall and was 18th for year-to-date sales. On the PlayStation chart, it ranked second, overshadowed only by "NBA 2K26," which launched on September 5.
"NBA 2K26" claimed second place on the overall charts and became 2025’s top-selling game to date, overtaking "Monster Hunter: Wilds." In September, a total of nine new titles made it onto Circana's charts. Notable entries in the Top Five included "EA Sports FC 26" at number three and "Madden NFL 26" at number five.
Other newcomers in the Top Ten were "Silent Hill F" at number seven, "Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds" at number eight, and "Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles" at number nine. Further down the chart, new titles in the Top 20 included "NHL 26" at number 12, "Digimon Story: Time Stranger" at number 13, and "Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2" at number 14.
In mobile gaming, Sensor Tower reported that seven games maintained their positions in the Top Ten. "Gossip Harbour" rose to number eight, "Royal Kingdom" to nine, and "Township" settled at ten. According to Sam Aune from Sensor Tower, "Clash Royale" remained in fifth place with a 12% increase in in-app purchase revenue, while "Kingshot" held its sixth spot without growth.
Advertising campaigns continue to support "Clash Royale," "Kingshot," and "Royal Kingdom." Meanwhile, content spending in the U.S. jumped 24% from the prior year to $324 million, driven by a 32% rise in non-mobile subscriptions, a 12% increase in console content, and a 4% increase in mobile spending.
Hardware purchases saw a 20% growth, reaching $32 billion. The Nintendo Switch 2 claimed the top position in both unit and dollar sales, followed by PlayStation and Xbox.
