Circana: US hardware revenue down 45% in January, with overall game spending down 15% to $4.51 billion

Circana has returned with its monthly overview of the US video game spending. Here are the top-grossing video games and hardware of January 2025, as well as other insights into the state of the market.

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth

  • According to Circana’s Mat Piscatella, the US video games market reached $4.51 billion in revenue last month, down 15% compared to the same period last year.
  • Hardware traditionally saw the biggest decline, falling 45% year-over-year to $205 million. This is the lowest January spending in the category since $131 million in January 2020.
  • Game content sales declined 12% to $4.11 billion, while revenue from accessories was down 28% at $194 million.
  • In terms of video game content, Piscatella noted that a 13% growth in non-subscription mobile spending couldn’t offset declines across other areas.

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 was the best-selling premium game in January 2025, ranking 1st on PlayStation and 2nd on Xbox.
  • Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth jumped 56 positions to #3, thanks to its launch on Steam. The Remake & Rebirth bundle ranked 16th last month, up 249 spots from December.
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns was the only new release on the charts, debuting at #8 (note that Nintendo only provides data on physical copies, excluding digital sales).
  • Other titles in the top 20 include Minecraft (#5, up 4 positions), Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 (#6, ↑7), Helldivers 2 (#11, ↑4), The Crew: Motorfest (#18, ↑13), and It Takes Two (#20, ↑62).

  • All consoles saw huge year-over-year declines in revenue last month: Nintendo Switch (-53%), Xbox Series X|S (-50%), and PlayStation 5 (-38%).
  • PlayStation 5 remained the best-selling console last month in the US by both dollar and unit sales. Xbox Series X|S ranked 2nd in dollars, while Nintendo Switch ranked 2nd in units.
  • According to Sensor Tower, Monopoly Go! continued to dominate the mobile games market, ranking 1st in revenue last month. Interestingly, interactive story app ReelShort broke into the top 10. Other top-grossing mobile titles in the US include Royal Match, Roblox, Candy Crush Saga, Last War: Survival, Whiteout Survival, Township, Coin Master, and Pokémon TCG Pocket.
