The latest study on the video game market in Africa shows that a remarkable 90% of its income stems from mobile gaming.

The 2024 Africa Game Developer Survey included input from 66 studios and 55 indie game creators, marking a 42% increase compared to the year before. Among those surveyed, a notable 92% were aged under 34.

Nevertheless, only 12% of those surveyed were women, highlighting "the necessity to enhance inclusivity and diversity in the sector."

South Africa is at the forefront in terms of earnings, having generated more than $110 million from 2020 to 2023. Expectations are for its market size to hit $333 million by 2026, mainly led by mobile gaming and esports activities.

Nigeria's gaming sector, buoyed by a youthful and tech-oriented demographic along with an expanding esports industry, pulled in $249 million in 2021. In comparison, Kenya's earnings hit $46 million, with "notable growth seen in mobile gaming and an emphasis on educational and augmented/virtual reality games."

Hugo Obi, CEO and founder of Maliyo Games, the survey's organizer, stated, "The African games industry is advancing rapidly, energized by a lively community and a steadfast spirit of innovation."

This year has marked significant achievements, including increased participation in industry gatherings and groundbreaking collaborations like the Disney Iwájú Rising Chef game.

While challenges such as restricted funding and access to global markets persist, the industry's trajectory remains strong. New emerging talents are joining seasoned professionals, forming a vibrant system supported by talent initiatives, community events, and regional conferences."
