Sony Report: Sales of Astro Bot reached 1.5 million copies, operating profit increased by 184%, MAU grew by 9 million over the year
Sony reported its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2024, which ended on September 30. Below are the figures for the company's gaming division.
Astro Bot
- The division's revenue reached 1.071 trillion yen (approximately $7.03 billion), marking a 12.3% increase from the previous year.
- Operating profit showed tremendous growth, increasing by 184% to 138.8 billion yen ($908 million).

- Games and gaming content generated 612.3 billion yen ($4.02 billion, up 27.7%), gaming services brought in 160.7 billion yen ($1.05 billion, up 20%), and consoles earned 218.2 billion yen ($1.43 billion, down 24%).
- Additionally, sales of additional content (DLC, in-game purchases) rose by 35%, now constituting 49% of total revenue.
- The decline in hardware sales was offset by factors such as increased sales of third-party games, currency exchange rate impact, and higher subscription revenues (primarily from PS Plus).
- This quarter, Sony sold 3.8 million PlayStation 5 consoles, 1.1 million fewer than a year ago (a 22% decrease). In total, 65.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles have been sold.
- Game sales totaled 77.7 million copies, a 14.6% increase over the previous year, with digital sales making up 70% of the total.
- Sony's internal studios sold 5.3 million copies of their games.
- As of September 30, 2024, the monthly active users (MAU) on PlayStation Network numbered 116 million, an increase of 9 million from the previous year's 107 million.
- Astro Bot sold 1.5 million copies worldwide in less than two months (as of November 3).
- Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut sold 13 million copies on consoles and PC since its release (as of November 8).
