The Borderlands movie has achieved a global box office gross of $16 million
During its debut weekend, the Borderlands film garnered $16.5 million globally at the box office.
According to Variety, the movie was produced with a budget of $115 million, plus an additional $30 million for marketing and distribution. In the United States, it earned $8.8 million, which is only 6% of its production budget.
Studio insiders revealed that international presales accounted for 60% of the movie’s production costs.
When queried by IGN about the film's performance and reviews during Take-Two's earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick mentioned that the film "wouldn't have a financial impact" on either the publisher or the Borderlands series.
The announcement of the Borderlands movie dates back to 2015. Eli Roth was confirmed as director and co-writer in 2020. The movie is executive produced by Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford and Zelnick.
