Square Enix Report: Operating profit more than tripled, but sales fell

Square Enix published its financial report for the quarter ending June 30, 2024. We have highlighted the key points from the document.

Final Fantasy XVI

  • Square Enix's operating profit increased by 250% to ¥10.8 billion ($74.2 million).
  • The company's quarterly net sales were ¥69.9 billion ($480 million), down 18.4% compared to the previous year.
  • The mobile and browser games subsegment led in net sales volume, bringing in ¥18.9 billion ($129.8 million). This marks a decline of 15.2%.
  • Sales in the HD games subsegment (console and PC games) fell by 57.4% to ¥12.3 billion ($84.5 million). According to Square Enix, revenue plummeted due to the lack of releases as strong as last year's. Notably, in April-June 2023, Square Enix released Final Fantasy XVI and the console version of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection.
  • MMO subsegment sales grew by 13.6% to ¥12.5 billion ($85.8 million). The main online games remained Final Fantasy XIV and Dragon Quest X.
  • Square Enix sold a total of 4.39 million copies of games for the quarter, which is 3.15 million copies fewer than the same time last year.
