Nintendo Report: Sharp Decline in Profits and 2 Million Nintendo Switch Units Sold for the Quarter

Nintendo reported the results for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2025, which lasted from April 1 to June 30, 2024. It was not a very successful period for the Japanese company.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

  • Nintendo's net sales dropped by 46.5% compared to last year, totaling 246.6 billion yen ($1.65 billion).
  • The company made 74.2% of its revenue outside of Japan, with the majority (44.8%) coming from the Americas.
  • The company's net profit decreased by 55.3% to 80.9 billion yen ($543 million).
  • As explained by Nintendo, its revenue declined due to the weak yen and decreased sales of the Nintendo Switch. Besides, last year, they released a very successful The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, not to mention the animated film "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which brought significant income to Nintendo.
  • During the quarter, the company sold 2.1 million Nintendo Switch consoles — a decline of 46.3% compared to the previous year. In total, it has sold 143.42 million Nintendo Switch units to date.
  • The number of game copies sold during the quarter was 30.64 million, a decrease of 41.3%.
  • The re-release of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, released on May 23, sold 1.76 million copies, while the re-release of Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, released on June 27, sold 1.19 million copies.
