Sony Annual report: gaming division revenues increased, console sales fell short of forecast

Sony has released a report for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2024. We have chosen the main thing about the results of the company's gaming division.

  • The division's annual revenue was 4.26 trillion yen, or approximately $27.3 billion. An increase of 17% compared to last year.
  • Operating profit increased by 16%, reaching 290.2 billion yen ($1.85 billion).
  • Revenue from sales of games and game content amounted to 2.2 trillion yen ($14.2 billion), revenue from sales of consoles — 1.2 trillion yen ($7.7 billion), revenue from gaming services — 545.5 billion yen ($3.5 billion).
  • PlayStation 5 sales for the year amounted to 20.8 million consoles. This is slightly below the forecast. In February, Sony said it expects to sell 21 million consoles, and this was already a lowered forecast. Initially, the company hoped to sell 25 million PlayStation 5.
  • Annual sales of games — 286.4 million copies. Of these, 39.7 million copies came from games developed by Sony studios. Over the year, the share of digital sales increased from 67% to 70%.
  • At the end of the fiscal year (January-March 2024), the monthly active audience of the PlayStation Network was 118 million people. At the same time a year earlier, it was 10 million fewer people.
