Media: sales of Final Fantasy XVI were below Square Enix's expectations. Update: this is not quite true

Final Fantasy XVI is selling worse than Square Enix expected. This was stated by the company’s president Takashi Kiryu during a briefing on the results of the last quarter, Bloomberg reports, citing three people who attended the event.

According to Kiryu, one of the reasons for the insufficiently high sales of the game was the limited prevalence of PS5, the only platform on which Final Fantasy XVI was released. But he noted that Sony has already solved the problem with the supply of consoles, and now Square Enix is preparing a number of initiatives that will help increase the audience of the game.

It is noteworthy that in July, a representative of Square Enix in a comment to IGN stated that the initial sales of Final Fantasy XVI are “extremely high”, considering that it is only available on PS5. Recall that in the first week after the release of Final Fantasy XVI sold 3 million copies.

Update: In his speech, Kiryu stated that sales of Final Fantasy XVI did not reach “the high end of the company’s expectations”. This means that they were below only the upper bar of the company’s expectations. I.e., in general, the game sold within the forecast.
