Sega earned more from gaming retail last year than from digital sales

Sega Sammy Group summed up the results of fiscal year 2017 (ended March 31, 2018). According to the company’s report, Sega earned ¥57 billion ($522 million) from the sale of physical copies of its games, while digital sales of titles generated ¥38.5 billion ($352 million).

Over the past fiscal year, the company sold 17.3 million gaming boxes — 7 million more than a year earlier. Sega highlighted the performance of the Persona 5 role-playing game, whose global retail sales exceeded 2 million copies.

Among the important digital releases, Sega highlighted the launch of the Magia Record mobile games: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story and D×2Shin Megami Tensei Liberation, and D×2 became the first mobile game in the Shin Megami Tensei role-playing franchise.

The annual revenues of the entire entertainment division of Entertainment Contents of the company remained at the level of 2016 and amounted to ¥208 billion ($ 1.9 billion). But the operating profit of this segment increased by 33% and reached 14.8 billion ($135 million).
