Starting January 1, 2027, the GameMaker engine, which focuses on 2D development, will offer its "next-generation runtime" known as GMRT for free for commercial purposes.

On that date, developers will gain the ability to create games and distribute them across platforms like desktop, mobile, web, and GX Games without any cost.

According to GameMaker, the simplified licensing framework allows developers to develop and commercially publish games using GMRT without buying a professional license, also granting access to source code at all levels. However, the pricing for different tiers remains the same.

Professionals with licenses remain entitled to commercially distribute using the existing GMS2 runtime and gain additional benefits by accessing its source code.

GameMaker highlighted that irrespective of the runtime used, developers will need to hold an enterprise license and receive approval to export to console platforms.

This decision, which follows earlier changes this year to GMRT's source code access, aligns with GameMaker's mission to enhance access for indie game developers.

"GameMaker has always aimed to democratize game development, providing flexibility to creators," stated Russell Kay, Head of GameMaker.

"As GMRT continues to be tested on various platforms, we expand our offerings to developers. We look forward to innovations from the community as this new phase of GameMaker unfolds."
