The source code of Unturned has been made available to the public
In recent weeks, developers have actively shared the source codes of their projects. Now, Smartly Dressed Games has joined the list by publishing the code of the zombie sandbox game Unturned on GitHub.
Unturned
Smartly Dressed Games made a generous gesture on the anniversary of the game: yesterday, July 7, Unturned turned 12 years old. They explained that publishing the source code is a way to thank the gaming community that has supported them for so many years. Smartly Dressed Games expects that fans will contribute to the development of Unturned and create a lot of new content.
The Unturned source code is distributed under Smartly Dressed Games’ custom license, which allows for the creation of non-commercial projects based on the game’s code. In the future, the studio intends to switch to an open MIT license, but first, they need to resolve the issue of rights to some components in the game.
Unturned was released in July 2014 in early access format and reached its full release three years later. Notably, at one point, the Steam version of the game attracted over 112,000 concurrent users—interest in the zombie sandbox has since waned slightly, but its daily online presence on the Valve platform consistently remains at 10,000-15,000 players.
Interestingly, Smartly Dressed Games has only two employees on staff. These are the game’s developer, Nelson Sexton, and the community manager known as MoltonMontro.
